WPRB, vinyl, new song (in that order)

1. I don't drive through New Jersey anymore (it's a long, painful story), but when I did I would always peep WPRB 103.1 FM out of Princeton for a good 90 minutes or so when I could pick up the signal between Phillipsburg and Newark. Great programming and DJs there, including the indomitable Jon Solomon of My Pal God Records. I definitely recall falling in love with a DJ who goes by the name of Lizbot the last time I drove through the Garden State.

My friend Maria has a couple of shows there this summer and also runs WPRB's blog, and she's never been a student at Princeton. A mutual love of Pavement and nerding out on the Internet brought us together - we've been buddies for over a decade now. Hopefully I'll be fortunate enough to host her on my show one day.

2. All-vinyl extravaganza on Pure Easy Listening tomorrow! Hopefully I won't be too wiped out by No Age and High Places in DC tonight.

3. New-ish song discovery of the day (thanks to the always-awesome pootee muxtape): Air France's "Collapsing At Your Doorstep"

my favorite (non-TJU) community radio

The station I probably listen to the most (both when I lived in the Bay Area and now online) is KFJC, from Foothills Junior College in Los Altos Hills, CA:

http://www.kfjc.org/

This station, to me, is the model of what "college radio" provides: innovative, obscure (and often downright abrasive) programming that supports a diverse range of musicians who otherwise are getting no pub (I honestly don't know how they get ahold of a lot of the stuff in their library -- think Aquarius Records, but in a radio station's library). Also, KFJC is very active in sponsoring live music events in SF as well as hosting bands (including lots of Japanese noise/psych) in-studio. Their fundraising premiums then include CDs of these live recordings from "the Pit" (as well as things like "an hour on the air" for $150).

Further, I like the simplicity and easy navigation of their web site, which still contains a wealth of info including playlists, reviews, club listings, etc. And, as mentioned, they have an online stream.

And, of course, there's always KUSF in San Francisco. An awesome station, though I have complaints about their web presence. (Same description, with slightly less enthusiasm and same caveat about the web presence, goes for KJHK Lawrence, KS.)

more exemplary college/community radio

A few more radio stations/websites that could serve as good examples

first: KVRX, the student-run rock station at the University of Texas. I think the takeaway point from this website is the "directors" page, wherein 15 or so people are listed as having responsibilities of some form or another for a station that only broadcasts after 7pm. If the meeting last night was any indication, there's certainly sufficient interest to pursue something similar here in Charlottesville. We're a motivated group of people.

Decent blog as well, easy connection to streaming content, &c.

second: one of the bigger ones, KEXP Seattle - honestly, I think that WTJU could do something like this with enough effort/dedication/convincing. We're affiliated with UVa, for chrissakes. Two-week streaming show content, a really nice blog, easy interface and so forth. I emailed them about the streaming bit, no word back yet. This site was almost certainly done professionally, however - should probably keep that in mind.

talking design, wbar is the station of barnard college (the women's college associated with columbia u) and is the student run station affiliated with both schools. their website is fairly simple, straightforward, and contains much of the kind of stuff we've talked about (blog-look, playlists, etc): http://www.wbar.org/

what other community/university radio websites look pretty?
