Radio Freedonia, March 11, 11pm

Howdy folks. So psyched to have Helvidius along for the ride last night - he brought the noise and kept things lively, as usual. The Wake? Group Bombino? Yes, please! Also previewed Thursday night's Arthur Russell movie at the Bridge. And WTJU young pup Vic! was in the house as well, dropping knowledge and turning us on to some Beefbud, Ariel Pink-style. Playlist up in here.

Radio Freedonia, 11pm-1am Wed 2.25-Thu 2.26

playlist from last night's show over here. i got to celebrate my new obsession, michachu and the shapes. turns out the album doesn't sound as full-on incredible as the "golden phones" single, but damn, that song's a jam! other fun stuff was this new album by blanketship, which arrived tuesday. makes perfect sense that it's awesome because they apparently have the imprimatur of wfmu. (do we have an imprimatur?) also previewed the plants & animals/straight punch show.

radio magic of the day: walking home from school, i decided to play GBV's 'watch me jumpstart.' later on, got a call from my homegirl, who needed a jump. i didn't even realize the amazing coincidence until after the show. someone should play 'weed king' and see what happens!

we'll see if this works - you can click on the above title to access the playlist, i think.

show was fun, and i was happy to continue the elton and betty white madness that mike started on street brow the night before. other highlights may or may not have been rufus zuphall and the yolks.

that's it for now!

13 November 2008

Radio Freedonia, Wednesday November 12, 11pm

Some of the evening's early stuff was inspired by the righteous Mod Dance Party thrown by fellow Teejers Tanner and Kimmy, Hummingbird Feeder, Helvidius, et al.

Then I got to previewing some shows in town - funny enough, most of them happen Friday, including the Full Moon Fest, which I hope convinces the Fry's Spring Beach Club to have more gigs. Bountiful parking - for those who aren't within walking distance...!

09 October 2008

Radio Freedonia, 11pm-1am, Wednesday October 8

I was super-psyched to play the new Juana Molina this week; it sounds better than the last one, although Segundo is still the bomb. The big discovery for me was this album The Glowing City by Sunset (sans brackets), which has apparently been languishing in the new bin for nearly three months. That other band {{{SUNSET}}} stole all the glory and I totally ignored just-plain Sunset, but it's pretty damn cool from what I heard. I played the Stanley Brothers because of this (totally worth the listen), and it was kinda nuts how well it went into the Digable Planets cut. Special thanks to Emma the trainee (not a tranny) who endured two hours of discombobulation in the studio. Long may she run!

Finally, I hope some of y'all go to the Young Sinclairs show tonight at the Twisted Branch so you can tell me about it!

07 August 2008

Radio Freedonia, Wednesday August 6, 2008 11pm-1am

Dominic played so much rad soul and funk on Wednesday afternoon that I wanted to follow it up with a bit more, scrapping the "swamp" theme but playing a little of that too. Things got fucked up when the main CD I was using stopped working in the players, arrrrgh. And Dave, we don't have any Leon Russell, that I could find. Bummed! And ashamed. 04 August 2008

Concentric Squares, August 4 2008 2-4pm

I subbed for DJ Danger Dimples today, happy to take advantage of the daytime opportunities. Aer Stephen came in at 3pm, and we had the Band House House Band (members of the Asylum Street Spankers) play a live set/interview for a half an hour. Then I came back on for the last 15 minutes - it was kind of a weird way to do it, but I was happy to have a touring band come on WTJU and Aer set everything up so I really didn't do shit during the setup/breakdown/interview/set except check email and listen to the show!

To preview Radio Freedonia this week: given the annual peak heat that has statistically just passed us, I want to do the annual Swamp Rock show, but Helvidius has to miss it so I'll just do that for half a show. So if you have swampy favorites - either from swampy places or just sounding swampy - let me know yo!

Ok so here's CONCENTRIC SQUARES from today. The first full set was inspired by a weekend trip to Athens GA. Bryan Poole (the late BP Helium and member of many other bands) fronted a Wings cover band that made me reevaluate the whole concept of cover bands. Blew my little mind.
