Radio Wowsville 11/18/12: Every Wave is New Until it Breaks
The "Old Wave" edition of Radio Wowsville shows that you can indeed teach old dinosaurs new tricks. Or at least you can scare them into buying a bank of synthesizers and some skinny ties.
Our two-hour tribute to established rockers and dinosaurs who, in the late 70s and early 80s, were spurred on to try their hand at the emerging new wave yielded up quite a few hidden gems, provoked a whole lot of noggin-scratching and re-posed many long-burning questions: Like: Who is Linda Ronstadt talking to on that telephone? And: What would happen if you gave Joe Walsh a Sennheiser Vocoder? And: Why didn't Daryl Hall and Robert Fripp make more albums together? Oh and: Which Tubeway Army LP was Alice Cooper's favorite?
Figures from the past staring into the future. Log on to http://wtju.net/vault and hear a stream of the show - just click on "Radio Wowsville." And while you are there at WTJU's snazzy tape vault, try some other recent WTJU programs.

Radio Wowsville 8-12-12: Are You Ready?
Radio Wowsville's Don "Uncle Beatdown" Harrison and Colin "Brother Breakdown" Powell teamed up on the listeners in this VERY SPECIAL edition of the Sunday night broadcast. Among the sonic airkisses, the episode featured a slew of moody funk, pop-damaged acid rock, and sassy sunshine harmony, not to mention a cameo appearance from the Soul Cop.

Radio Wowsville 7/15/12: Crystal Ball
This episode of Radio Wowsville marked the 18th birthday of "our little problem," even though there is some dispute about when RW actually started. We do know it was sometime in the summer of 1994 but that's as far as our research and long term memory will take us.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Wowsville without the dim witted announcer making a major on-air fubar. For some reason, I kept telling listeners that Wowsville started in 2004, instead of 1994. This is wrong - a blatant attempt by an oldster to look younger than he really is. Don't believe him, er, me. It was definitely 1994 because I was still wearing flannel.

Radio Wowsville 3/18/12: Love Potion #10
In honor of the gorgeous SPRING-like weather this past weekend, Uncle Beatdown and Brother Breakdown teamed up for a set of angst-ridden love songs, soulful come-ons, interpersonal relationship laments, blatant booty calls and all things romance. Because love is in the air.
Consider it a two hour sonic hickey.

Featured Five: "No Soap, Radio!" 3/10/12
It’s always a little hard to explain exactly why I play what I do on my show. Still, for your enjoyment, I will attempt to dissect five of my selections for you here. Hopefully, you won’t decide it’s all too much nonsense for you to handle but, if you do, I’m sorry. (Actually, no I’m not. It’s 1 until 3 a.m. on a Saturday morning. Insanity is status quo at that point in the weekend. Just embrace it.)
1). “Ich Erinnere Mich An Die Weimarer Republik” - The World / Inferno Friendship Society
I started out the show with this gem from The World / Inferno Friendship Society. The piano and brass in the intro just blew me away the first time I heard it and I’ve been meaning to include it in one of my playlists for a long while now. But, what really sold me, are the lyrics: “You think your scene’s dead? / Well, mine got killed / by some dimwit’s triumph of the will.” There’s a slightly irked, but not vitriolic, undertone to this track that makes it much more than just a bouncy, danceable number and, well, that’s typically the music to which I’m drawn.
2). “Off the Books” - Guignol & Mischief Brew
If the last track’s anger was subtle, this one lays it all out front. There is, however, a jovial revelry in the song which, paired with lyrics condemning materialism, make me think Leo Tolstoy would dig it. And, anything Leo Tolstoy would dig gets a pass by me. (What? I need a better reason than that to play something? Too bad, sometimes things don’t have to be deep.)
3). “Lovers Are Waterproof” - Herman Düne
Yes, I realize that’s a totally lame name for a song. Even the band agrees, but you’ll have to listen to it to find out how. Anyway, Herman Düne is an absolutely remarkable Swedish anti-folk pair I’ve been listening to a lot of lately. The singer’s accent adds a nice addition to the lyrics, which are in English, and make the non-native pronunciations of words like “beer” and “weed” seem completely natural. I’d put this at the top of my featured list, but then it wouldn’t be in chronological order.
4). “Candy Shop” - Fatima Spar Und Die Freedom Fries
If you guessed I picked this song purely because of the band name, you’d be half right. Fatima is Turkish, but the Freedom Fries are an Austrian group, and their sound is something else altogether. Oh, and it should be mentioned that this isn’t a cover of some awful pop-rap song but, instead, a cover of the Andrew Bird track. I’m pretty sure I’d have liked the jazzed-up version of either, but it is always good to see Andrew Bird getting some recognition.
5). “Goodnight Ladies” - Lou Reed
That’s right; I ended my show with Lou Reed’s “Goodnight Ladies.” Everything about this song makes it a perfect closing number: Lou’s voice is pure gold, the lyrics reference a T.S. Eliot poem and that final note could serve is a segue to almost anybody else’s show. Honestly, I try to end most of my shows with this song. It’s just that good.

Radio Wowsville 3/4/12: A Little Bit Davy
This week's Wowsville is dedicated to Davy Jones of the Monkees, who passed away last week at the age of 66. We played as many of our favorite Davy/Monkees tracks as the RIAA will allow, and gently remembered the diminutive Brit who swooned the masses. For more on the late teen idol, his life and (yes) his ties to Virginia, click here. The illustration is by our good buddy Pat McGeehan, a true daydream believer. It's an old sketch from 1981, he says, finished around the same time he purchased a used copy of "More of the Monkees" Thanks Pat!

Radio Wowsville 1/29/12: Keep Yourself Up!
One of the highlights this week: A 10 minute "radio broadcast" from Lester Moran and the Cadillac Cowboys, a fake side band created in the '70's by Staunton country music legends the Statler Brothers. Funnier than Ray Stevens, wilder than Homer and Jethro, drier than Sheb Wooley and way more out of tune than Little Jimmy Dickens, these Rainbow Valley honky-tonkers plied their tirades on an essential and hilarious platter called "Alive at Johnny Mack Brown High School."
Genius, thy name is Statler.

We're happy to be back on this snazzy site posting playlists, gossip and random fodder. Radio Wowsville has a new co-host (Brother Breakdown), a terrible cold and a whole new supporting cast of wacky next door neighbors popping in at inopportune times.
