Radio Wowsville 12/7/08: "People Say We Monkee Around""

Thanks to everyone who made the big MONKEETHON such a blast (and don't forget to catch Head tonight at the WTJU Rock and Roll Movie screening). My lovely co-host Miss Olivia gets kudos for her keen requests (especially "Riu Chiu"), and it was great to have Nick Rubin stop by and confide his deeply-rooted Monkee love (your secret's safe with me, Swami). Most of all, a shoutout needs to be sent to the three callers who rang in and kept the evening weird. The first one thanked us for airing his favorite Beatles song, "Last Train to Clarksville." The second one was sure we were playing Jefferson Airplane and swore up and down that Micky Dolenz was Grace Slick. The last one rang up and said the music was "great" but that the show was "annoying." Yes, the great Monkees debate rages on!

Radio Wowsville: So Righteous Baking Fudge

It's a Pleasant Valley Sunday at Wowsville!!

On Sunday night at 11PM, Radio Wowsville gives righteous props to the "Pre-Fab Four."
That's right: Wowsville will showcase two hours of timeless bubblegum hits, stellar psychedelic album tracks and ear-popping country rock outtakes from The Monkees. 
And why are we doing this? Well, one reason is that the Monkees remain one of the most fascinating case studies in '60's rock. And their music holds up a lot better today than it has any right to.
Whatever the cultural baggage they have lugged around since they ruled 16 Magazine covers in their 1966-1968 heyday, Micky, Mike, Davy, Peter and their handlers managed to take Richard Lester’s cinematic innovations with the Beatles (who were among the Monkees' biggest fans — John Lennon once compared them to the Marx Brothers) to new and interesting places on prime time television. And one could argue that, with Head, their 1968 motion picture, the Monkees actually outdid the Liverpool moptops for once.
The hilariously over-the-top Head celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The main reason for this week's Wowsville tribute is that Head is the featured film on tap for this Monday's WTJU Rock and Roll Film Night — proving once again that movie night programmer and WTJU Rock Swami Nick "Howsa 'bout some more steam?" Rubin should be nominated for his own special Wurlizer Prize!
Head (directed by Bob Rafelson and co-written by none other than Jack Nicholson) will be screening for free at 8PM on Monday night in Room 120 of Olsson Hall — a.k.a. The Computer Science building. Yes, you read that right: The WTJU Rock Department is planning to give you Head... for free!!!
