from the new bin: Mason Jennings

Mason Jennings' new CD, "In the Ever" preserves the laid-back and humorous acoustic atmosphere of his live shows. "Memphis, Tennessee" is the song that most resembles his previous album, with a lively harmonica and an old-country lilt. But songs like "I Love You And Buddha Too" and "Your New Man" exude a playfulness (both musical and lyrical) only hinted at in Jennings' self-titled album. Give it a listen, and perhaps you'll be interested in seeing him in person when he comes to D.C. on October 1 (9:30 Club).

surprised to read such a gentle review of what i considered to be a sad effort from mr. jennings. I'm a huge fan of the stripped down, wry and observant songs from a few albums ago. But with this most recent one- well let's just say that it reminded me of when Bob Dylan found God. And that is not a good thing, musically speaking. Limp songs, sappy religious lyrics, with none of the snap that made me a fan in the first place. oh well, you can't win them all I guess. at least he seems like he's spiritually content...
