Reissue of the year:

Beach Boys – the Smile Sessions (Capitol) – People will claim that this isn’t a reissue. But it is. Much of this work was released over the years on Beach Boys albums, and these sessions have been bootlegged (and sampled and mashed up) numerous times, and presented in sound quality that almost matches the Capitol restoration. Classify it how you like, the original “Smile” is still one of popular music’s greatest trips, and it was long past time that these doomed sessions got an “official” release. Note: Only diehards will really need the tricked out boutique edition of this package, but I predict that either version will provoke moans of pleasure and earfuls of joy.

This year there were so many great albums it was hard for me to just choose 10.

For the fans of hard electronic beats and disco struts, The Future Islands, The Cults, Destroyer, St. Vincent, John Maus, The Crystal Castles and M83 all pulled out their synthesizers to make varied and memorable albums that would make anyone dance.

Merrill Garbus, tUne-yaRDs, fused African beats with her playful, Nina-esque voice and created a truly unique album in WHOKILL. I really respect this album for its isidiosyncrasies, even if I don't care for the choice capitalization of LeTTeRs.

As Kurt Vile plucks his guitar, melancholia pours out his lyrics in Smoke Ring For My Halo . The song "Baby'Arms" makes it hard for this girl who loves broody men to resist the man and the album.

Holy Moley! Girls takes you on a ride in Father from poppy Honey Bunny to the gospel guitar ending Vomit. This album takes from the LP Album as a confessional, but it is more refined and as each song builds to an end you just want more and more. I haven't had a full year with Father, Son, Holy Ghost, but it is ending 2011 as my favorite and will continue on into 2012.

sprawling, stoney california laurel-canyon rock plus mad guest stars ripping with restraint. get with it on a rainy day.

another album's worth of crazy beautiful music from mr. bondy. this one manages to sound just like the ocean...

3. borrowed beams of light- stellar hoax (world records)
homegrown rockers deliver again...don't sleep.

4. delicate steve- wondervisions (luaka bop)
imagine if ween were a really upbeat instrumental afro-beat band...on david byrne's label!

5. bon iver- bon iver (jagjaguar)
just can't help it...this album was gorgeous. i listened to it a lot.

6. unknown mortal orchestra- s/t (fat possum)
so fun...manages to sound brand new AND retro...strange and infectious.

7.tuneyards whokill? (4ad)
some powerhouse tunes here from a force of nature.

8. vetiver- the errant charm (sub pop)
always solid vetiver...also featured on the jonathan wilson record, so winning extra points...

9. crooked fingers- breaks in the armor (merge)
this is eric bachmann from the archers of loaf...i will always represent for eric. as good a songwriter as is out there...and 20 years or so in...cheers, sir.

10. j. mascis- several shades of why (sub pop)
another old-schooler still bringing it, just with an acoustic guitar. you go, j.

11. kurt vile- smoke ring for my halo (matador)
this album probably should have made my top ten...but is it really so bad to be 11?

perhaps kind of a mellow assortment, but that's how the musical (y)ear went down for me in 2011. thanks to the teej (staff and volunteers), my dj partner court, and all the callers/listeners this last year...i've been having a great time bringing you rocke for your tuesday afternoon.

It's a tuneful way to kick off The Community MLK Celebration, a packed series of events commemorating King's life and legacy that is being sponsored by the University and affiliated organizations. These lists are kind of silly. We know. They're also a great opportunity to catch up on great releases you might have missed during 2011. Over the next few days, we're going to be sharing our top picks for the best albums of the year so you can do a bit of backtracking if need be. First up, yours truly from the rock department....

1. Fucked Up - David Comes to Life (Matador) - ...and the best live show(s) I saw this year. Blazing three-pronged guitar attack. Unstoppable lumbering rhythm section. A heavyweight WCW championship wrestler for a front man bursting with positive energy. Gaudy rock-opera lyrics. This album is the very definition of "going for it" with reckless abandon.

2. Destroyer - Kaputt (Merge) - Dan Bejar rambles eloquence over a coked-up 80's soundtrack.

3. Dirty Beaches - Badlands (Zoo) - A better David Lynch album than David Lynch's album

4. Tim Hecker - Ravedeath, 1972 (Kranky) - Unnerving soundtrack to things being destroyed over eons.

5. Times New Viking - Dancer Equired (Merge) - A little cleaner sounding. A little better than their last album.

6. James Blake - James Blake / Enough Thunder (ATLAS) - This guys voice gets me every time.

7. John Maus - We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves (Upset the Rhythm) - Ariel Pink associate.

8. Moon Duo - Mazes (Sacred Bones) - Wooden Shjips spin-off. Even drone-y-er.

9. HTRK - Work (work, work) (Ghostly) - The black sheep of this list... was actually passed on during rock hours (yikes!). Admittedly, not a great album for radio, but a great album for sitting alone in a dark room having a "moment."

10. James Pants - James Pants (Stones Throw) - Not an Ariel Pink associate, but you could have fooled me. Way better than his name would suggest.

"Hyper Enough" Superchunk - I went down to Carrboro to see Superchunk at the Cat's Cradle last year. They pretty much pummel you during their live shows, and playing in their hometown turned the concert into a test of endurance. After the show, they were kind enough to sign a copy of "No Pocky for Kitty" for me. Jon Wurster, their drummer and champion of the universe later tweeted: "Kid asked me to sign 'no pocky.' Didn't even play on that record. Instant Death"

"So Young" Suede - I love this album. The album art, however, makes me extremely uncomfortable.

"Random Rules" Silver Jews - David Berman's crowning achievement in my opinion. American Water is one of the very few records I've bought on a whim, without hearing any previous work of the artist or any of the songs on the album. Happiest mistake I've ever made.

"The Freed Pig" Sebadoh - I've heard this song is supposedly about Barlow and Mascis' falling out when Lou got kicked out of Dinosaur Jr. You wouldn't guess it watching Mascis, who looks like a silver haired warlock wielding a Jazzmaster, but record shows him as being a terrible terrible bandmate. "Pista 12" - Wahh and the Arggs

thissong is by a band from Valencia, Spain. I was living there, dating this guy,and he told me his neighbor was “un friki” (a modern-day Spanish archetype of apunk, a weirdo, someone you respect for being so far out but that you couldnever truly relate to). Anyway, this boyfriend of mine befriended his weirdneighbor, who in addition to being the proprietor of a local comic book shopwas in a screamy dreamy post punk band called Wahh and the Arggs. It’s a killerband, with a killer album, one of those local legends that you’d never find outabout, unless you heard it on the show, or happened to be a part of this verypeculiar subset of Spanish culture.

"DaftPunk Is Playing at My House" - LCD Soundystem - LCD Soundsystem

TheDJ before our show wanted to play this, but he ran out of time. It is basicallyone of the greatest songs, like, ever. Only improvement would be another LCD cover byKermit the Frog. But really, do you need another reason for why we includedit in the show?

"Ça Plane Pour Moi" - Plastic Bertrand

Somepeople (read: any girl in their early- to mid- twenties who used to wearscrunchis, make lanyards, and sport jelly sandals) might recognize this trackfrom a Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movie that featured it as the soundtrackduring a shopping mall montage that made you feel simultaneously like the worldwas a beautiful place and that you were hideous and lame for not being thosetwins. The song, though, is way cooler than the Olsen twins, or my childhood inthe millenium. Plastic Bertand was actually kind of a sad dude from Belgium wholost the Eurovision contest, but who hit it big with someone else’s song: ÇaPlane Pour Moi, which literally translates from French as “All’s good with me.”It’s from 1977 and it rocks HARD, and the lyrics,although they’re pretty incomprehensible in both French and English, are allabout how life can kind of suck, how your luck can change at any moment, buthow you just have to sit back and say “hey, that’s cool with me.”

"Captain Shiner" - Primus

Ceebsand I got a phone call at around 2:30 in the morning, after a break in which wetalked mainly about pizza and how sleepy we were. This dude asks us to playsomething by Primus, so off to the library we go, locating the P drawer andseeing what our options are. The only thing we could find was “Tales from thePunchbowl,” and when we popped it in to the CD player, we misread the run timeof each song (it was 2:30 in the morning, remember?) and thought each onelasted at least 30 minutes if not an hour or more. “Captain Shiner” was theonly track that appeared normally. These are the informed decisions welate-night DJs make on a weekly basis.

"Sleepyhead" - Passion Pit

Thissong conjures up memories of my second year at UVA. A friend of mine would playit in the evening before Going Out, with the sole purpose of luring herstudious roommate, our friend, out of her room and into party clothes, andultimately onto the Corner. We’d put it on and by the second or third bar ourfriend would appear at the room of her door, whining something of a resigned:“you guys! Not fair! I have this huge paper to do!” She’d always end up comingout, having fun, and still getting an A. #goodtimes.

Featured Five with Ye Olde Tuesday Afternoon Rocke Show

The rock department blog has been undergoing a bit of a renovation recently. Part of this is going to be the inclusion of new weekly features. Kicking things off is Dave Moore with our new "Featured Five" section in which a DJ breaks down part of their show. Check back in on Sunday for another!

1. Broadway- Black Girls

Ok- i will just be up-front in admitting to a bit of nepotism here, albeit of the smallest variety...kind of like a 2nd cousin twice-removed of nepotism: I am old friends with two sisters in Richmond, and their younger brother is in this band. There- i said it. Regardless, I had been hearing about these guys (not a one of them either female nor African-American) for quite awhile without having a chance to check them out, but when I finally did (at the Southern, and then again at the Jefferson), I was pretty impressed. They really go for it in a glammy art-rocke sort of way, and I can be a sucker for that sort of thing on occasion. I actually think they are stronger live at this point then their recording suggests, but it is a strange and interesting first album, and worth checking out, esp. since they are regional fellas...can't Richmond and C-ville play nice, ya'll?

Anyway- playing this song set me off on a glammy art-rocke sort of set, which included an olde favorite favorite:

2. so into you- Shudder to Think

This song has to be one of the craziest and most abstract covers ever...yes, it is "So Into You" by the Atlanta Rhythm Section, but so totally deconstructed that it is not at all recognizable as such until maybe 2/3rds of the way through, when you get a little "oooh woo hoo" from Craig Wedren, and even then you would likely have had to grow up listening to 70's fm radio in the backseats of cars as a kid to place it.

Shudder to Think's "Pony Express Album" (which this tune is on) had to be one of the weirdest major-label debuts ever (they went from Dischord to Epic), and also yielded one of the weirdest hit singles of the 90's, "X-french Tee-Shirt"...anyone else remember that jam from the summer of '94?

3. Lonesome Warrior- Eric Bachmann

So I think Eric Bachmann is great...I will go ahead and just say I consider him to be one of the best singer/ songwriters of our generation, and I hope one day he will be widely known as such. Archers of Loaf, Barry Black, Crooked Fingers, plus his solo album...good lord, that's a lotta good music since 1993.

Although I was playing the new Crooked Fingers song "Tyhoon" in advance of their show at the Camel in Richmond this Sunday, I had to play "Lonesome Warrior" as well off his solo album "To the Races", which is amazing, and worth finding on vinyl if you can, as the title cut is different than on the cd and just incredibly beautiful. Here's the video for this song if you want to see it...Eric at his best, heart on his sleeve and recording in a hotel room, showing what seem to be incredibly personal home movies while he breaks your heart with yet another gorgeous song:

4. ffunny ffriends- Unknown Mortal Orchestra

This song represents one of the great things about volunteering at the station...this came from a regular listener who called in and told me I would probably really like this band...and guess what? They were absolutely right. My dj partner Courtney is good like that also...if she says I will like it, that jonk is usually verdad. (that means the thing is true...I get carried away sometimes.)

But anyway- the point is, this whole album is a lot of fun, and when I played this song I got a call from ANOTHER listener, who had just figured out how to play it on guitar while listening to the show. Nice.

I recommend it to all now, and have had another call from the first listener and have some new stuff to check out, and that is a good thing.

5. the Ballad of the Pines- Jonathan Wilson

See what I mean? I got this one from Courtney, my esteemed partner in audio crime. And good golly but Mr. Wilson's "Gentle Spirit" album is good. It's better than good.

Granted, you have to be able to handle some sprawling, stoney, epic, 70's sounding west-coast rock stylings, but if you like that sort of thing, let me tell you: you cannot go wrong with this record. 13 songs and 78 minutes...you get the picture...it's a big smoky slab of rocke with a good many of the songs weighing in over the six minute mark. You might consider dusting off your headphones for this one...
